Yesterday on the Meseta

Leaving from Carrion De Les Condes at 10.15 yesterday morning was a real pleasure. Kate and I started the walk knowing that we had a Roman road to walk. It was a 19km walk, although it was windy it was fairly warm. The road ran pretty much straight and true, with the odd pothole (not bad really) the road was intermitantly lined with poplars alternating from one side to the other. An embankment on our right dropped down to an over grown river that ran for the entire 19km. To our left fields stretched out for miles and miles in all colours of greens and shades of brown. We marched that road, it was the only way to do it, the sun and the clouds played with each other. One minute the path would glimmer in the sun light the next you could see the clouds eating the sun on the road as it disappeared into shadows. Then the road would explode back into light as the sun chased the clouds away. Looking up we had a halo of clouds above us, thick white cloud with a huge expanse of blue above our heads. We even managed to stop and sit in the cold for a break. Finally a glimmer of hope a village called Calzadilla de la cueza. Stopped for the most amazing spinach cheese tortilla, fresh orange juice then on. We walked 32 km yesterday. But the roman road will stay with me. It was mentally and physically quite difficult. But it was also quite magical.
