We walked out of Burgos this morning at 7 am, it was cold and crisp. As usual we push our pace as we like to get some kilometres in before breakfast. There was still frost on the ground as we finally left Burgos behind. Even though the Meseta is at quite a high altitude the path is long and level. As we covered kilometres the Meseta revealed itself to us in all its cold windy beautifull glory. The wind seems to eat you up, there is no where to hide out here on the Meseta. The skies are huge painted different hues of blue flecked with white fluffy clouds. The path cuts through fields of green on one side and hills green but flecked with brown on the other. Then it opens into huge wide expanses on both sides of green fields or rolling hills. Pilgrims fear the Meseta, for its mystery, its difficulty, its weather and what it does to your head. This 220km section will not be easy, it will be hard mentally and physically. But I am interested to see how I will be at the finish of this section. It is supposed to be the place where most tears are shed and much can learned. We walked 34 km today, my head is clear I am tired and ready to sleep. Tomorrow is going to bring possibly snow, rain, thunder, lighting and probably more wind.
Simon, the best read yet!
